Sheridan High School Censors Gay Student Profile: Rikki's Take

I'd be lying to you guys if I told you I didn't know this was brewing for quite some time.

This saga began a while back in my husband's Journalism class.

You see, if you have read this article by the Human Rights Campaign, you know what I'm talking about. But my husband is the advisor to this group. He oversees the yearbook. And right now, he is DAMNED proud of his kids.

The yearbook staff was charged with finding some student profiles with a story to tell. They are celebrating what makes us all different but that they all come together in the same community: Sheridan High School.

There were several different profiles included: a student who was adopted, a student whose friend passed away, a student who had to use a wheelchair for a while; just to name a few.

But also included was this story of a boy who came out on social media a year ago and who has been accepted in his community. It is a very uplifting story and one that needs to be told, especially in a small town like Sheridan where students are often afraid to be different.

In fact, here is the story:

"I use to be scared to say that I'm gay," Taylor Ellis, junior, said. "It's not fun keeping secrets; after I told everyone, it felt like a weight had been lifted from my shoulders."
Ellis's "secret" was first shared in the summer of 2012, with his friend Joelle Curry, junior, and his mother, Lyn Tillman.
"I wasn't surprised at all," Tillman said. "I don't care because he's my son, and I know he's happier."
Ellis, who said he struggles with depression, which has gotten better since he has come out.
However, Ellis waited until spring break of 2013 to tell the rest of his peers; he did so through the social media site, Instagram.
I put it in my bio, and hashtagged pictures,” Ellis said. “When people would ask me about it, I just said 'yes I am,' and that was that."
Although the thought of coming out, and the repercussions of doing so, frightened Ellis at first, he found that most of the student body, as well as the teachers, were very accepting of him.
I wrote about it in Mrs. Williams class; it was when I first came out," Ellis said. "She told me she was glad I shared that with her. We had a stronger bond after that, I think."
"He had poured himself into it," Summer Williams,  sophomore English teacher, said. "It was one of the best ones I read. I was just so proud of his openness, and his honesty. It was a risk; sharing that with his classmates, but they were very accepting. It was good for him. I could tell he felt better after writing about it."
Ellis found that while people do not treat him with disrespect, some do seem to be more distant.
"Some guys are more reserved around me now," Ellis said. "But not a lot of people have been mean about it, thank God. I'm actually in a good situation. I'm very lucky."

When talk began of taking this story out of the yearbook, Justin made sure to let the administration know that this was illegal. Arkansas has a law prohibiting censorship of student publications (Arkansas Student Publications Act). Administrators may only censor student publications that are obscene, libelous, constitute an unwarranted invasion of privacy or incite students to commit unlawful acts or those against school policy are “not authorized” under the act.

This clearly doesn't fall under that category.

Does all of this sound a bit familiar? Maybe because just last semester, Sheridan made national headlines for cancelling a Muslim speaker on 9/11 due to backlash from the community.

National Coverage

Are you ready for Rikki's take?

STOP EMBARRASSING THIS STATE BY BEING BIGOTS!!!

The education system in any town should be the EXAMPLE, not bow down to the uneducated demands!

How are things going to change in Sheridan? How are students going to know it is okay being themselves? How are students going to become educated about other cultures if they aren't allowed to learn about them? How are you going to pretend you are protecting an openly gay student from bullying by not putting his story in the yearbook?

YOU ARE THE BULLY.

And you are also the coward.

You are the leadership. In Sheridan, the school IS the town.

Be the leader. Do what is right.

This is absolutely shameful.

You are lucky to have teachers such as Justin that take the opportunity to teach students very seriously and are teaching them to find great stories, produce legitimate journalistic material, and to know when their rights are being taken away and how to stand up for themselves.

Those types of students are the future leaders of America. Do we want to teach them to bow down to peer pressure, or to stand up for what's right even when it isn't easy?

If nothing else, here's a little advice from Liar Liar:

STOP BREAKING THE LAW, ASSHOLE!
If you want to sign the petition to get the principal and superintendent's attention to reverse the decision, please go here and add your  name. If nothing else, support these students in their fight for what is right.

Ash Wednesday: Let's Get Real

Hi, I'm Rikki. And I've been hiding from God.

I wish there was some epic reason as to why that would make this post somewhat easier, but there isn't.

I'm just being a brat.

I don't want to hear what He has to say, so I haven't been reading or praying. Nay, I've just blatantly ignored Him.

The reminder goes off on my phone to read, I ignore it.

My alarm goes off in the morning, I turn it off and go back to sleep.

Straight up ignoring Him.

Have you ever done that? Be honest with yourself.

I know it isn't the right thing to say. And lawdy are some Southern old ladies gasping for air as they read this, but let's just be real.

When you were a child a did something bad, did you run and tell your parents with glee? Or did you hide under you bed, hoping they would forget you exist?

And that, to me, is what Lent is all about.

For me, this year especially, it is literally a "come to Jesus" meeting.

Stop ignoring.

Stop hiding.

Own up. Repent. Get on the right foot.

You can't hide forever. You can't make excuses forever.

At some point, the jig is up.

Not this jig. This jig is rad.

Lent is a time of reflection. Of sacrifice. Of renewal.

What am I sacrificing this year?

My ego. And it is going to suck.

What are you giving up this year?

(for more of my thoughts on what to give up for Lent, visit last year's post here or two years ago here.)

Teaching Your Child To Give

I'm so sad that it has taken me so long to type this post. We have a bit going on right now with Justin's mother being sick right now and it just hasn't been in the cards until today.

Last year when Sam was two, I told him about how there are some kids who don't get anything for Christmas because their parents can't afford it. I asked him if he wanted to give some of his toys to them so they would have toys to play with.

At first he was skiddish. He wasn't sure because he loved all of his toys (even the ones he NEVER PLAYS WITH).

I decided to illustrate it another way.

I said, "Sam, these other kids have no toys at all to play with. Could you imagine coming home one day and not having ANY toys to play with? Wouldn't that make you sad?"

I took a little too far...

He puckered his face up and started to softly cry and says, "Mo-mma-dat-would-make-me weewy-sad."

I said, "I know baby. So don't you think it'd be nice to give them some of your toys? That way you'd have toys to play with and so would they?"

He cried some more but nodded enthusiastically and started grabbing EVERYTHING!!!

Cool light up trucks that he plays with every day... games he plays with... police cars...

I had to step in and say, "No baby! Don't give away all of your favorite toys! Let's look and see what all you have and give away stuff that isn't as much fun for you as it used to be!"

He still insisted on giving away some pretty cool toys that year but we ended up sending a few bags worth of toys to the church.

Our church, Oak Forest Methodist, is the most giving church I've ever attended in my life. They have food pantry, free health clinic, free dental clinic, free counseling and social work services, and a free eye clinic. They feed the homeless under the bridge. And they have an average Sunday attendance of about 75 people.

That's a lot of love for such a small church.

I called Pastor Russ that year to see if he knew of a family that could use these toys for Christmas because I was sure he could. He said to bring them to the food pantry and they would let the families coming through for the pantry take some. Little did I know, that year there was a family that came through that wouldn't have had a Christmas for their kids had it not been for Sam's toys.

Needless to say, I was proud of my son.

This year Pastor Russ approached me to head up a bigger drive this year (one with more than one donor, lol). I was game for it. We made a few announcements in the Sunday services leading up to the last food pantry before Christmas. Sam made his donations (again being very generous with some pretty cool toys).

I was scheduled to show up that Friday a bit early to help set up and sanitize toys.

When I walked into that room I almost fell over.

There was enough toys for 42 families!

42!!!!

They each got to pick one per child and by the end we had them coming in to get extras because we had some left over!

I teared up. I was so proud. The generosity of my son sparked something that made 42 families' Christmases a little bit brighter.

Proud momma...

Get Your Thanksgiving Panties out of a Bunch

Watch out guys! Rikki has her sassy-pants on today!

Someone please enlighten me. When did being a pompous ass with your nose in everyone else's business become more preferable than greedy consumers? Exactly when did that occur?

I'm so sick of seeing all these posts on Facebook of people posting their status as some guilt trip for anyone who plans to shop on Thanksgiving or Black Friday.

Bitch #1:
I've seen people post that they need to be focusing on Jesus on Thanksgiving because He is the reason for the season.

Reaction GIF: facepalm, Bill Cosby

-- Umm... no He isn't. You are thinking of Pilgrims and Native Americans. Or Christmas.

Bitch #2:
How about the post on "take back Thanksgiving" and boycott those companies who open on Thanksgiving night or midnight on Friday.

-- This is a losing battle folks. If you want to boycott them, by all means do so. But I challenge you to think of this another way...

What if Black Friday shopping is a tradition for this family. What if shopping together at Thanksgiving is a cherished memory for them?

Do you have traditions of your own? Did the pilgrims sit down with the Indians and watch a vigorous game of football? Did they sit down together and play board games? Did they go out and catch the latest release of the Hunger Games? Why is shopping so terrible when most of us do one or all of the previous listed things?

Get over yourself.

Bitch #3:
Every time you decorate for Christmas before Thanksgiving an elf dies. (or a cat... or angel loses its wings... or a disease ridden rat bites a baby... whatever).

-- Listen folks. I loves me some Thanksgiving as much as the next person. And I think big department stores whip out the Christmas stuff a bit early myself. But does it hurt you in some way if a family gets joy from seeing their decorations up before we gorge ourselves on turkey? Does it hurt you in some way?

Because the thing is... there are no such things as elves... and if God takes away an angel's wings b/c of a tree decorated in twinkly lights then perhaps I've gone a picked an asshole God to worship...

Again... there are pedophiles and murderers roaming the streets but DAMMIT DO NOT PUT UP A JOYFUL TREE DECORATION IN YOUR HOME BEFORE WE SLAUGHTER A TURKEY!!!!!

BE DAMNED YE SATAN WORSHIPPERS!!!!!

Maybe it is just me but there could be bigger fish to fry in the world than over-zealous Christmas decorators?

What is the moral of my rant this morning?

Mind your own business and do what makes you happy this Thanksgiving. Life is too short to be butting into everyone else's lives. If someone chooses to waste their precious memories with family in exchange for the flat screen TV they've coveted for so long, your status isn't going to change the fact that they are an asshole.

Your status could, however, make someone second guess going out with their family on Black Friday as a tradition because they feel the judgmental guilt you have bestowed upon them.

Me?

I won't be Black Friday shopping on Thursday or Friday in the late/early hours because I don't like people that much. The last time I went out on Black Friday I heard a man yell at the top of his lungs in a Toys R US parking lot,

"THAT MAN JUST WHIPPED HIS WEINER OUT! THAT MAN! THAT MAN RIGHT THERE IN THE RED HOODIE JUST WHIPPED HIS WEINER OUT IN FRONT OF MY DAUGHTER!"

(He was peeing by a van and didn't see the little girl but that was enough for me to decide I was being out-crazied at every turn and should have just stayed home and ordered online.)

The fact is crazy people act crazier when in large crowds and I already get all throat punchy at Walmart on a Tuesday. It is a public service for me to stay home.

I wish you all the happiest of Thanksgivings and I hope you spend it with people who make you happy doing what makes you happy.

WTF Wednesday: Facebook Giraffe Riddle

Okay guys... enough is enough.

Have you seen all the giraffe profile pictures on Facebook lately?

Do your Facebook friends' profile pics look like this? Apparently they're not so good at riddles.

People have to post their profile picture as a giraffe if they get a riddle wrong.

Here is the riddle:

3:00 am, the doorbell rings and you wake up. Unexpected visitors. It's your parents and they are there for breakfast. You have strawberry jam, honey, wine, bread and cheese. What is the first thing you open?

Here is the answer:

NO ONE CARES!!!!!! UGH!

Actually since the "riddle" clearly says you wake up (implying your eyes are open), the answer is door. However, people seem to have some self-esteem/superiority issues and are all, "Actually, you would have to open your eyes first."

Judgey Giraffe judges you.

Here is some real talk for you:

If you wake me up at 3 am expecting breakfast, you better hope like hell I've already opened the wine and I am shitty drunk on it so I don't notice how big of a TWIT you are being!

You know where you can get breakfast at 3 am?! Waffle House.

Get to steppin'.

Now that it is settled...

I will flat murder a giraffe too...

If you are going to answer this riddle and get it wrong even though you weren't wrong (I still say door and wine a perfectly appropriate answers and equally right)... at least post your picture with one of the following amazing giraffe pictures:

And my personal favorite:

Have a great Wednesday folks!

Angry Baptist Lady Called the Cops on Me and Flipped me the Bird!

I'm still laughing as I write this.

You are probably thinking, "Good grief, Rikki. What did you do to this sweet old lady?! Did you run her over in your car?! Did you kick her puppy?! What?!"

I merged.

That's it. I exercised my right to remain on the road when a lane ends.

Now you are probably thinking, "Well Rikki, did you merge like an asshole?"

Valid question.

Answer: No, no I didn't.

I was driving on the access road from Bryant to Little Rock. I was in the left lane and angry Baptist lady (ABL) was in the right hand lane. The lane is about to end so I looked behind me to see if anyone was near me and I see ABL at least two car lengths behind me. I turned my blinker on as I continued to look behind me, just in case.

She sees my blinker then gasses it.

*giggle* Oh no. Not happening.

So I went on and got over.

Should I have let her pass me on the right hand side when I mid-way through a merge?

Possibly.

But that would have resulted in me sitting on the side of the road waiting on ABL to pass me. That seems absurd.

What transpired after this is only meant for SNL skits...

This lady, who couldn't have been a minute under 60 years old, flips me off like it is her JOB!

Waving it at me... mean scowl on her face.... she is giving me the SUPER FINGER!

 Seriously. This is happening.

And I can't hold my laughter! It was one of the most ridiculous sights I have ever witnessed. She was so angry!

Dear ABL,

I'm sorry I utilized my right to remain on the road and gave you ample notice to see this was happening. I sincerely hope you weren't late to your appointment to get the stick surgically removed from your ass.

Sincerely,

Momma w/ a Dude Name

Apparently seeing me laugh about the situation didn't set well with her. I wish I could have held it in for her sake, but it was too darned funny.

Clearly my laughter equated the response of me setting her on fire... because then she angrily lunged at her phone so she could take pictures of my license plate! I have no doubts she then called the police to turn me in.

Dang law abiding citizens... merging and junk... we are a menace to society!

I feel like I'm forgetting something... let's see...

Oh yeah! How did I know she was Baptist?!

Because when she raced around me at her earliest convenience, she was sporting a sticker from her church on her bumper! :-)

Way to represent, ABL. Way to represent.

As someone so eloquently put it this morning, way to let your light shine!
